“I Can’t Imagine Trump Abandoning Ukraine,” Says Polish President

Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed confidence that President-elect Donald Trump would not allow Russia to “destroy Ukraine,” citing Trump’s competitive nature and the substantial investment the U.S. has made in Ukraine’s defense. Speaking at a press conference on Nov. 13, Duda stated, “President Donald Trump — I cannot imagine that he would allow Russia to destroy Ukraine, in which the United States, in which the American taxpayer, for whose money President Donald Trump will soon be held accountable when he takes office, has invested such huge amounts.”

Duda’s remarks reflect ongoing speculation regarding Trump’s stance on Ukraine, as analysts and politicians continue to assess his plans for achieving peace. Trump has pledged to end the conflict in Ukraine within “24 hours” of taking office but has yet to share specific details on his approach.

The Polish president emphasized Trump’s reputation as a “born fighter” who “does not like to lose.” Duda suggested that Trump’s competitive drive, along with U.S. financial commitments to Ukraine, would likely deter him from withdrawing support.

Increased U.S. Support for Ukraine Before Trump’s Term Begins

In a separate statement, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the Biden administration intends to ramp up military aid to Ukraine in its final months, aiming to maximize support before Trump’s term begins in January 2025. Blinken made these comments in Brussels on Nov. 13, highlighting the administration’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense.

Poland and U.K. Forge Alliance to Support Ukraine

Amid uncertainty over Trump’s Ukraine strategy, Poland is proactively working to “Trump-proof” its support for Ukraine by building a coalition with the United Kingdom. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is expected to meet U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the coming days to discuss continued assistance for Ukraine. Tusk also has plans to hold discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

The Biden administration’s approach to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been a key focus of his presidency, with gradual increases in military assistance since Ukraine’s defense of Kyiv in April 2022 marked a significant moment in the conflict.
